Deep Dive In The Faroes by Thibault Gras (Orkney)

The Faroe Islands are synonym with travel and adventure. Isolated and hammered by the winds, far from our homes (for most of us) they are a challenge within the challenge. Such a place needs exploring and that what we went for on Thursday, May 16th. A walk through time, first stop: the birth place of the Faroese self determination and cultural awakening. In the middle of the mountains, we received an in depth narration of a milestone of Faroese 20th century, accompanied with a taste of the Faroese (not suitable for everyone though!).

And then it all went down, litteraly, untll Kirkjubøur. There we swam against the flow of time, back to the beginnings of Faroese settlements, all thanks to the narrative of our guide and host for the night. As we can see with this challenge, the Faroes are a meeting point for the people of the North Atlantic. Irish, Danish, Norwegian and even St Magnus of Orkney have history on these land, and Kirkjubøur was the epicentre of most political and religious power.

Our brain fed with stories, we gracefully went on to accept the hospitality of our host, whose wife and team and arranged a delightful banquet, filled with joy, drink and nourrishment. Stories and discussions went on and on, heating up this old log house, were so many, like us, had feasted. Replenished and joyful, we headed back to our own settlements. The strong spirit of those many who had fought the elements before us to come and develop this place that we can now enjoy. In the spirit of the fearless Vikings and under the lead of the brave Daniel, some of us tried themselves against the icy water, in the bay of Torshavn, their last dive of the night into the Faroes.
